The Motorola DEFY water resistant and dust proof design stands up to rain, spilled drink, drop in the sand and other every day mishaps.

To ensure maximum resilience to liquid and dust, the headset and charging grommets must be fully engaged.

If your DEFY inadvertently comes into contact with liquid, then follow the steps below:

  1. Dry off all liquid from the phone with a dry cloth.
  2. Shake any excess liquid from the entire phone, especially the display, speaker and microphone ports.
  3. Allow your phone to air-dry for at least 2 hours before using it again.

Some examples of common mishaps that the DEFY can withstand:

  • Spilled drink (water, coffee, milk, tea, etc) on the phone.
  • A quick drop in a shallow rain puddle, the toilet, or the sink while washing dishes.
  • A fall into sand at the beach, dirt pile, or flour bowl.

Liquid (non-corrosive, i.e. no cleaners): water, snow, coffee, tea, milk, juice, liquor

Dust: sand, dust, sugar, salt, flour, soil

Warning! The Water Resistance feature does not guarantee protection against the usage of this device under the water. Do not use the handset in water. The DEFY is not water proof.

Task Manager

The Motorola Task Manager is an application that helps you maintain the performance of your Motorola Android phone. It monitors memory and processor usage, and alerts you to problem applications. It also provides you with tools to stop and uninstall applications, or add an application to the auto-end list.

Access the Task Manager

To open Motorola Task Manager:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Task Manager.

End applications

To turn on or turn off Auto-End Task Manager:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Task Manager.
  3. Tap to select the check box next to the application(s) you wish to close.
  4. Tap End Apps.

View processor and memory usage

The Applications tab displays the status of the processor and memory of your phone and lists all of the applications that are installed on your phone. They are ordered by processor use, memory use, and alphabetically. Applications using the most resources are at the top of the list. If an application is using a lot of resources and you do not need the application, you can end it or uninstall it. Only applications downloaded from Play Store can be uninstalled. Preloaded applications can either be added to the auto-end list or be ended.

However, you cannot end or uninstall applications that are essential to the functionality of the phone.

To view the processor and memory usage for an application, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Task Manager.
  3. Scroll down and view the processor and memory usage for each running application.

Auto-end applications

Android is a multi-tasking operating system that allows multiple applications to run at the same time. Even though an application is not active or in use, it may still be running and using memory. Assigning applications to the auto-end list reclaims memory from applications that are no longer needed. Freeing up memory improves performance.

For example, when your screen is off, the browser application does not need to be running. Adding the browser to your auto-end list will free up approximately 10-20 MB of memory.

You can add applications to this list from the Applications list, or directly from the auto-end list.

To auto-end applications, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Task Manager.
  3. Tap to select the check box next to the application(s) you wish to auto-end.
  4. Tap Add to Auto-end.

Enable performance notifications

When Performance Notifications are enabled, Task Manager monitors processor and memory usage when your phone's screen is active. When Task Manager detects an application that is using the processor too much, or too much memory over an extended period of time, it displays a notification in your status bar.

When you pull down the notification shade and select a notification, the Task Manager opens and scans your phone for applications that are using excessive memory or are using the processor too much. The results are in the Applications tab, where you can end or uninstall the application (unless it is a system application).

To enable performance notifications, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll down and tap Task Manager.
  3. Tap Menu.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap to select the check box next to Notification.

What is a performance notification?

When you enable Performance Notifications, you will receive status bar notifications when an application overuses the processor or memory for an extended period of time.

How do I uninstall an application? (Android 2.2)

Only applications that users have downloaded from the Play Store can be uninstalled. To uninstall an application, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Manage applications.
  5. Tap the application you wish to uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap OK to confirm.
  8. Tap OK.

How are applications sorted in the applications list?

Applications are ordered by processor use, memory use, and then alphabetically.

Why do some applications in the applications list have CPU/RAM information and others don't?

Applications that do not contain any memory (RAM) or processor (CPU) information are not actively running.

Why can't I end, uninstall, or add certain applications to the auto-end list?

You will be unable to end or uninstall applications that are part of the phone's main systems. Since these applications are essential to the functionality of the phone, Task Manager will not allow you to end or uninstall them. Only applications downloaded from the Play Store can be uninstalled. Preloaded applications can either be added to the auto-end list or be ended.

What does the icon next to the application name mean?

Applications with a little white icon to the right of its name are on the auto-end list. Applications in this list will be ended two minutes after the screen turns off.

Why does the CPU fluctuate so much?

Processor (CPU) usage on the phone fluctuates as system and applications perform tasks. Certain tasks, such as email or browsing, require increased computation or use different components of the phone which increases processor usage. Processor usage rises and falls as your phone begins and ends various tasks.

Do I need to configure the auto-end list?

Android allows multiple applications to run at the same time. While convenient for the user, on occasion, this causes a problem as applications never really end. This means that applications will continue to use memory (RAM) even when not active. To prevent the system from running out of memory, Android has a memory threshold; unused applications are ended when this threshold is reached. When the system begins ending applications, it is possible that the phone's overall performance will be impacted as memory is freed and re-assigned to new applications. By using the auto-end list, you can maintain enough free memory to keep your phone running smoothly.

What applications should I put on my auto-end List?

If you do not want an application to run when your display is off, then add it to your auto-end list. For example, if you want to listen to your FM radio or Music Player, something you want to run while the screen is off, do not add it to your auto-end list; doing so would cause your music to stop two minutes after the screen display turns off.

When will the Performance notification be displayed?

When processor and memory usage is excessive for extended periods of time (1.5 min), the notification is displayed. When processor and memory usage drop, Task Manager will clear these notifications.

How is Task Manager better than other task managers in the Play Store?

Task Manager is tuned to Motorola handsets and applications. Task Manager notifies you when there is a problem and prevents you from ending applications and services that are critical to system stability.

Play Store task managers do not notify you when there is a problem nor do they distinguish between critical system and core applications for users. If used incorrectly, they can cause more problems. For example, some system applications are configured to auto-start. If a third-party task manager ends or auto-ends an application that is configured to auto-start, this will cause a loop and cause the phone to crash. Also, some applications, such as voicemail, are tied to the phone's radio and ending those applications will cause you to lose the ability to make calls. Task Manager prevents this from happening as well.
